IT security for accounting firms

Your firm holds what criminals pay for: social insurance numbers, financial statements, payroll and banking details. We look after accounting firms of 5 to 100 people across Canada, and much of our work comes by referral from accountants we already support.

What we see at accounting firms

Tax season can't go down

February to April is the worst possible time for ransomware or a failed server. Managed detection, patching and tested backups are how you avoid finding out what that costs.

CRA-themed phishing

Fake CRA notices, fake client portals and fake e-signature requests peak when you're busiest. Account takeover detection catches the sign-in that follows the click.

Payment redirection

Criminals who get into a mailbox, or spoof your domain, send your clients new banking instructions. Identity monitoring and DMARC close both doors.

Client files everywhere

SharePoint, Google Drive, portals and email attachments. We keep access tidy and back the data up separately from Microsoft or Google.

Practice software on a server

CaseWare, TaxCycle, QuickBooks Desktop or Sage often still live on a local server. We protect and back up the server they depend on.

Insurer and practice-inspection questions

Renewal applications ask about MFA, EDR, backups and logging. We document what's in place so your answers are accurate.

Questions accounting firms ask

Do you support our tax and accounting software?

We look after the computers, servers and Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace environment it runs on, including backups of the server and its data. Problems inside the application itself go to the software vendor, and we'll work with them on your behalf.

Can you help us answer our cyber insurance application?

Yes. Send it to us and we'll go through the security questions with you so the answers match what is actually in place. Start with our free policy review.

Do you work with firms outside the Lower Mainland?

Yes. The Protect stack and remote support work anywhere in Canada. Onsite visits are available in the Burnaby to Abbotsford area.

What happens during tax season?

The same thing that happens the rest of the year, which is the point: monitoring, patching and tested backups are already running. Support hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Pacific, Monday to Friday, and after-hours help is available when you need it.
